Matthias grew up freshwater fishing in Germany.
In 1994, after several trips to the Canaries for windsurfing he made the decision to move there permanently. That was the year he caught his first blue marlin on their 18 foot walk around.
Matthias describes that the fishing in the Canaries during the 90’s was great. Very few boats with plenty of blue marlin and tuna, he has awesome memories from fishing Gran Canaria, Gomera and Fuerteventura.
In 2002 a new project was born when he started his company ‘Atlantic Fishing Charter’ on Ascension Island. Matthias spent his time there fishing from his boat HARMATTAN for blue marlin and tuna.
In 2008 he brought SMOKER to Cape Verde and he first fished the CV season in 2009. Today ‘Atlantic Fishing Charter’ now has 3 boats that fish the CV season, THE HOOKER, SMOKER and SAMBO.
Matthias states that Cape Verde is the most consistent Blue Marlin fishery he has heard of. Numbers and sizes are unique and the advantage of being able to relocate between the other islands (Sao Vicente, Sao Nicolau and Santo Antão) means we can always find the right water to chase marlin.
Matthias has had countless incredible days fishing Cape Verde but has shared his 2 most special memories;
“Our angler Mike Callahan caught 10 blues in one day including 3 over 500lbs and a 700lber! A pretty awesome effort for a single angler!’
“The other was with Albi and Bjoern, we were traveling to Sao Nicolau and had only caught 1 blue along the way. We finally arrived at our fishing grounds at 3pm and within the next 3 hours we had released 10 blue marlin!’
“I am very thankful for everything I have been able to do and see over the years fishing in CV. Our crew and anglers were all awesome and made these experiences possible! I am very glad that Atlantic Fishing Charter has lead hundreds of anglers to their first blue marlin or their fish of a lifetime. The people of Cape Verde have given us a lot and welcomed us with open arms, I am happy we are able to give local crew the opportunity to work with us. The people of CV deserve our support and respect.”
